Icbn problem

so since my mastectomy and lymphadectomy I have been getting weird feelings in my upper arm and shooting pains.  After lots of googling I think it is Nerve pain of intercostobrachial nerve (ICBN).

Do a lot of people experience this initially and does it normally fix or resolve itself please?

I was feeling quite positive but now feel a bit fed up as it's just another thing to add to the list.  I can't see anywhere whether it's a common thing or how it gets fixed or treated.  This is actually causing me more problems than the surgery sites.

Thank you

  • Hello Badger77 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about these shooting pains and can understand they are getting you down along with everything else.

It is still quite early days after your surgery so this pain might still improve in the short term as things continue to settle down.  I think it can be easier to put up with pain when you know how long it will last for, but it isn't usually possible to be exact about when things like this will go away.

When pain is because of nerve damage/injury, the nerves usually repair themselves but it might take a while (weeks or months).

I'm afraid I don't know how many women experience what you have noticed.

Do get in touch with your breast team (your surgeon in particular) and see what they think about it. Hopefully it will sort itself out soon.

If you want to talk anything over please give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are here weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
