Lump in armpit

Hi, I don't really know why I'm writing here, maybe I want reassurance or just somewhere to talk. I am 38 with three young children. Recently my right breast has been a bit sore behind my nipple. This nipple is slightly inverted too (it's always been like this, I had it checked about 8 years ago and was told it was OK) but I've noticed this pain, sometimes like a burning pain in my breast, not sore to touch but when you press in the nipple area.

I saw my GP on Wednesday and he examined me, he couldn't feel any lumps but to rule anything out he has referred me to the best clinic. But since leaving the GP that night my armpit became a bit sore and since then (2 days later) there is a lump there :( I'm getting really worried now and feel quite emotional. I can't help overthinking and thinking the worst.

But honestly, does this sound like something to really worry about?

Thank you x

    Hi JLP107,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry that we cannot answer your question. You are likely to have some tests done at the breast clinic and, the results of these  will give you the answers that you seek. This is always a worrying time and our minds tend to play some nasty tricks on us. Most of us tend to expect the worst and our emotions are all over the place, just as you describe.

You should usually be seen at the breast clinic within 2 weeks from the date of referral and it will usually take a further 1-3 weeks to get the results of these tests. Even if it is cancer, breast cancer  is one of the most treatable forms of cancer. I myself have had 2 bouts in the past 12 years and I still lead a busy and fulfilled life. Having said this, only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis.

Whatever you do, steer clear of going on the internet, as much of the information there is poorly researched, out of date or aimed at the most spectacular cases and will only serve to scare you further.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Here's hoping for favourable results!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx.

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thanks for your reply. I'm trying to keep my mind on other things today as I fell down the internet rabbit hole yesterday evening. That's how I ended up here.

You post is really helpful and had made me feel a bit better, so thanks for taking the time to respond. So glad that you're doing well too ️

It's amazing that I'll be seen in two weeks, I just how it comes around quick..... so fingers crossed it's positive - and I'll be sure to check back in.

    Thank you,

    Jo xx

    Hi Jo,

It is all too easy to fall down the internet rabbit hole, but I'm sure that you've already discovered that it only scares you further. There are a great number of different types of breast cncer, all of which can have different outcomes. Until you know exactly what you are dealing with, it is only natural that you will hone in on the worst case scenario.

This is always a worrying time, but try to remember that 'it isn't cancer until you're told that it's cancer.'

I am keeping my fingers crossed for good results!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and understand they can be a worry.

Unfortunately no one on here can tell you what the matter is but I can say that most breast changes will be caused by something far less serious than a cancer.

It is always best to get worrying symptoms checked out by a doctor and it is good to hear your doctor has referred you to the breast unit just to be on the safe side.

You can read more about breast pain here. Breast pain isn't a common symptom of breast cancer and is usually caused by hormonal changes, infection or a muscle injury that settles with time.

Arm pit lumps are also commonly caused by swollen lump nodes due to infection or cysts and can occur if someone is a little run down so try not to let your mind run away with you for now.

I hope everything goes well for you but do get back if you need to. You are also welcome to call one of the nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday-Friday 9-5 if you would like to.

    All the best

    Naomi
