Right Sided Upper GI pain after colonoscopy and gastroscopy

Hi All,

I had (for the first time today) a colonoscopy and gastroscopy in one procedure.

I was semi sedated and whilst finding the whole procedure extremely painful I was also given gas and air.

I just wondered if anyone else found their procedure particularly painful?  7 hrs later I'm also experiencing some pain and discomfort on my right side, I'd say around the rib cage area, is this normal? I'm feeling quite worried.

  • Hya.

I had both procedures/cameras at same time, but without being sedated due to ill health and medication reasons so i understand how painful it was for you, and like yourself, i suffererd with some pain and discomfort, but I was told that I might feel a bit more discomfort than expected due to having Diverticulitis - Which i did, but It settled down after a couple of days.

I think the discomfort could be due to a combination of the air or whatever they use so they can see inside better and the prodding and probing with the camera, but if the discomfort/pain persists, then I'd either just phone up Endoscopy for some advice or your GP Practice.

I think the discomfort you're feeling is prob just due to the procedure, but best to be safe than sorry, and ring Endoscopy and ask for advice.

Hope all turns out ok for you.

    Good Luck and Take Care.

  • Hi

I hae my first colonoscopy done nearly two weeks ago and like you required additional gas and air as the pain was so bad, and i am on fentynal for another condition!  I felt pain and discomfort in the same area for a couple of days afterwards but settled down by fourth/fifth day.

I think the pain was from where they biopsied plus poking around and the gas they use to inflate bowel.

i hope knowing someone experienced similiar helps to put your mind at rest, however, I woukd say if pain remains or worsens to contact your Consu ltant for reassurance.

i hope your resu lts are clear, this is the horrid bit, just waiting!

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can see that another member has responded to you with good advice.

You can expect some discomfort for a couple of days after the procedure, this is not uncommon. Take some simple painkillers such as paracetamol to ease it.

If it gets worse, or doesn't resolve in a couple of days, then contact your GP, or the Endoscopy Unit for advice.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
