Breast lump - 8 weeks after stopping breast feeding

I have a large breast lump on my right breast, I am awaiting an appointment at the breast clinic to have this checked. I had a appt with GP last week.

I breastfed my baby for the first two weeks and stopped x8 weeks ago. The last 3 weeks I have noticed a large lump, feels around 2 inches long (taking up around a quarter of my breast underneath my nipple and lower right side. It feels fibrous and doesn't cause pain unless I try to hand express I get some discomfort the next day (GP recommends I do this daily in the shower to relieve a blocked milk duct but I'm not getting much milk) any thoughts/advice? Feeling very anxious as I haven't received the appointment yet and I'm not getting many answers from googling other than the lump feels/describes like cancer

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Breasts changes after pregnancy is very common.  The charity Breast Cancer Now have produced some information on what happens to the breasts after pregnancy.  Have a look here.

Sometimes a milk duct becomes blocked while breastfeeding or it can happen when you stop breastfeeding. This can cause a breast lump to form.

It's good that your GP has referred you to the breast clinic for further assessment. They will assess your symptoms, and be able to advise you, and hopefully reassure you too. It may also help you to know that the majority of women referred to the breast clinic do not have breast cancer.

I hope everything goes well for you.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
