Awaiting mole biopsy

I went to the doctors to get two moles on my chest checked which he said looked fine but after looking at others found one on my back that presented atypical melanocytic lesion clinically and dermoscopiccally asymmetric of pattern he referred me while I was there and had it removed within about 3 weeks at hospital  he did say he just wants to be safe but I found out on the day that mine had been fast tracked and I should have my results in two weeks as you can imagine I am stressing it's been a week since my biopsy n have not heard anything yet but It's all I can think about do you think I'm stressing over nothing is this normal procedure?

  • Hi Hayley I just read your message now and I wanted to let you know my own experience.

I had two abnormal moles removed from my lower back and leg in the last month. I had a excision on both of them and had two layers of stitches so I believe they took out quite a lot of the skin around the area too. All healed now and still waiting for my results but they told me it could be up to 6 weeks to wait. I had originally been fast tracked to get them removed but my results don't seem to have been fast tracked at all so I'm not sure whether that means they're not so worried about them or whether they don't have the capacity to check them all at the moment.

What type of moles were they? what sort of size have you had any issues with miles before? I'm sure it will all be okay and it's probably just standard procedure in your area. I think my area is a bit behind with other results at the moment so things are a bit slower. Try your best not to worry I'm sure it'll be okay!

  • Hi Sarah Was small but I also had the same the two layers of stitches and the butterfly stitches and I noticed that on my letter it said tracker on which I google n found out that that is apparently a two week wait and they told me I should have them within two weeks I hope so because it's all I think about atm I suppose the good thing is it's gone now I hope you get your results soon xxx also I have had 3 removed as a child but that was more an option with this one it was strongly advised

  • Hello Hayley and thanks for posting,

Things like this are inevitably stressful, most people find it hard not to worry until they get their results back, but try and keep an open mind for now. .

The 2 week fast track referral system is for suspected cancer, however it is important to know most people referred this way don't turn out to have cancer at the end of the day, but in case they do it makes sense to get seen urgently. Abnormal looking moles with certain features are routinely referred for fast tracked assessment (often called the two week wait), but this doesn't mean they have to be cancer, they could just be an abnormal looking mole.

I think there can be some local variation in how long it takes for biopsy results to be reported on. As you were told yours would be back in 2 weeks, I think you will have to sit tight for now, but after that you could try chasing them up with the hospital.

I know it is a tall order, but try your best not to worry and distract yourself as much as you can.

    All the best

    Julia

  • Thanks Julia i know I'm impatient as it's only a week today I was not that that stressed leading up to the biopsy but now it's really playing on my mind Thankyou for the reply and hopefully all is ok I like to think if it was bad that I may have already heard from them so fingers crossed thanks for the reply x
