Discomfort after colonoscopy

Hi,

Just writing in as I'm experiencing discomfort following a colonoscopy 3 days ago with general anaesthetic. I had the GA due to the fact I've had Diep surgery 2 years ago and so my previous colonoscopy was uncomfortable due to this. I'm in a lot of discomfort now due to a lot of trapped gas and feel like I need to have my BO.

Would it be safe to take a stool softener? Has anyone done this after colonoscopy under GA? I'm walking around a lot and when n fact went for a walk the same day of the procedure and also the last couple of days.

Can anyone advise?

Many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am so sorry to hear about the discomfort that you are experiencing and hopefully as time goes on this discomfort will get better.

Guys and St Thomas's have produced some information about what to expect after a colonoscopy. Have a look at their advice here.

Normally the bloating is relieved by moving around (which sounds like your doing) but drinking peppermint water or drinking peppermint tea may also help to relieve the symptoms.

It is not unusual to have a change in bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhoea after the procedure. Having cleared your bowel out with all the different bowel preps that you have taken it can take a few days to get back to normal. Try and increase how much fluid you are drinking and make sure that you are having enough fibre in your diet such as whole meal bread and fruit.

We can't give advice on medication but do give the endoscopy clinic a ring and ask their advice about taking a stool softener if your symptoms continue for the next couple of days.

You may here from other members of the forum but bear in mind that everyone's situation is slightly different so it is difficult to compare one person with another.

If you would like to have a chat with one of the nurses on the helpline then do give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
