Bladder cancer recurrance

Hi

I had a rigid cystoscopy yesterday after my third recurrance in one year for non invasive BC

1st TURBT they removed g2pTa urothelial carcinoma

2nd TURBT some necrotic mass  was taken away which was left from initial TURBT

3rd  g1pTa urothelial carcinoma was taken away

After my latest procedure I  spoke to my surgeon afterwards and he told me he took two very small tumors away but there will be no biopsy needed ? he also said  has also booked me in for 6 sessions of mytomycin C and told me to call the urology nurse today to get it set up.

I called the nurse today who told me I have to wait until they have the team meeting next week  .

I am really confused as to why there was no biopsy taken ! he was not clear about it but did stress they were tiny little tumors is this normal procedure ?

And why has the nurse told me something different to him ? she said he sometimes asks patients to call to make sure  it's not missed !!?

Any advice would be really appreciated ?? Thanks in advance Margaret

  • Hello Margaret and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your confusion.

I am not sure why they did not take any biopsies this time and that is only a question that your surgeon will be able to answer. If it is a surgeon that is familiar with your cancer he may have felt that he had all the information that he needed but of course I am not sure.

Mitomycin C is a fairly standard chemotherapy that is offered for patients with bladder cancer. It is also fairly normal for surgeons to discuss this with their colleagues to confirm if this is the best option.

We do have some information on the treatment options for bladder cancer which you can see here

I would get in touch with the nurse who is supporting you and ask these questions to her. Do let her know about your confusion and your concerns.

It is important that you have your questions answered. I can understand that it is unsettling when you don't know the correct procedure about whether the hospital will ring you or whether you should follow it up yourself.

Do check with the nurse when the meeting is likely to be and if you haven't heard yourself then get in touch with the surgeon's secretary to try and find out more.

Surgeons have such a huge work load with so may patients to support and the nurse might be providing a safety net so if you have not heard that you follow it up yourself.

I do hope that you are able to have your questions answered and you feel less confused.

If it would be helpful to chat any of this through with one  of the nurses on the helpline then you are so welcome to get back to us.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
