Worrying smear test

Hi,

I had results of smear test today confirming I'm HPV positive and also have abnormal cells I'm 24 years old and have a 15 week old baby. I have also been experiencing some tummy pains the last couple of weeks

I have a colposcopy booked in for Tuesday however I am absolutely filled with worry and cannot help but Google and expect the worse

  • Hi and thanks for your post

Getting smear results that need follow up can fill people with a blind panic, but it's important to remember that abnormal cells are not cancer and that the majority of people - over 80% will have HPV at one time in their lives. The immune system will usually get rid of HPV and though it sometimes can reappear again , it will not cause any major concerns in the majority of people .

The cervical screening programme is all about preventing cervical cancer and picking up cells that have changed before they become cancerous, so they can be treated . It's not unusual to get abnormal smears and you can read more here about abnormal cells and what to expect at the colposcopy clinic   If you would like to get some more information about HPV have a look at Jo's Trust information -

Tummy pains are not usually associated with cervical cancer and possibly may be due to anxiety - but do make an appointment or a call with the GP, if it continues.

Try and not read too much on the internet other than a few sites such as the ones in the links, as there is misleading information out there and can only cause more anxiety.

Please do give us a ring here on the helpline, as it can be helpful to sometimes have a chat about what's going on for you - the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Wanda
