Three months after lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy

Hello I would just like to know is it natural to still have pain near the wound. There are still hard lumps there, they are reducing but hurts to touch. And I get stabbing pains too wondered if the radiotherapy could have something to do with it ? As it did cause skin to peel my wound is under the breast. I am using cream and it is getting better thank you

Hi just read your post, and yes its quite normal to still feel pain,I don't know how long ago you finished Radiotherapy, but after you finish all your sessions it does get worse after around 2 weeks if finishing it,and you do get stabbing pains. I had lumpectomy of right breast, and all lympth nodes were removed from under my right arm, as three lympth nodes contained cancer cells.  I finished my 8 rounds of chemotherapy on December 14th 2020  finished Radiotherapy on 30th March 2021. I started to feel worse 2 weeks after finishing Radiotherapy, and was told this was normal.  Started to feel a lot better, but now I'm getting pains in my breast, shoulder, and I have pain in my feet and hands in mornings  my right  thumb is extremely painfull and locks up. I'm on Letrazole till 2029,that's 10 years, and this is some of the side effects of letrazole.  Hope this answers your question.  Hope things improve for you soon.

  • Thank you so much it's about 4 weeks now since I finished radiotherapy. I have not returned to work yet, as j have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis and have had a lot more pain around my body too,I guess the soreness is from the radiotherapy and it's tender under breast to touch with the lumps, but at least I understand why now thank you for replying. I'm new on here and have felt emotional since all therapy as stopped I'm on Anastrozole for 5 years thank you

  • Hello there,

I am sorry to hear you needed to have treatment for breast cancer and are now having some pain.

It sounds like you are experiencing some very common side effects from both the surgery and radiotherapy treatments that you can read about here and here. It can take time for both the skin and the nerves and muscles that have been prodded and poked to settle down so do give yourself and your body the time it needs to recover from all of this.

It is good to hear using the cream is helping, so do continue. If taking over the counter pain relief also works then do take this also but do of course mention it to your team if things worsen or you notice any other changes so they can assess you further.

Hope you are feeling more yourself again soon but do get back to us if you need to, you are also welcome to call us on 0808 800 4040 Monday-Friday 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you for your reply and advice. I will keep an eye on things and should I be worried will get in touch with the breast care team . Also I have not gone back to work yet had my op in July and radiotherapy in august . But on top of everything I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, and copd I have not felt in mind and body to go back yet . But I feel bad as so many people seem to go back quickly I suppose everyone is different , I think it all just hit me after the treatments . Thank you
