ITP

Hi has anyone had any experience with a very low platelets count.
my son came down stairs ans I noticed he was covered in tiny dark in colour rash.
concered we headed to the emergency department.
straight away doctors looked and suspected ITP

taking bloods his platelets count was 70 where they should be around 150 at least.
we was sent in an ambulance to the children's department.
relased 24 hours later advised to not do any activity that could cause an injury resulting in internal bleeding.
2 days have gone by and  now received a appointment to see the doctor again in the hospital.
I'm worried this could be cancer and I'm asking if anyone else has had anything similar happen and what was the out come

thanks

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am afraid we are going to be unable to say why this has happened with your sons platelets, and anyone on the forum who has experienced this will have their own individual reasons as to why this has happened.

It is so very hard as a momma when we are worried about our children being poorly. But unfortunately you won't find the answer to what is happening on the internet, as it is only the hospital team who will know.

Here is a link about ITP in children, which may have some useful information for you.

I know this is far easier said than done, but if you can try and keep yourself busy until your appointment, that is the only way to distract the mind so that time goes quicker.

    Take care,

    Sarah.

  • Hi,

Ive just seen your post and wanted to share my hubbies experience. I appreciate you posted a year ago so your son probably has some answers now.

My hubbie developed ITP recently. He has been treated for cancer for the last 3 years, but it was not the cause of his ITP. His Dr say it's due to something triggering his immune system to attack his platelets. In my hubbies case they don't know the cause, so he's on various treatments to try and stabilise his platelet levels. Hope that helps a bit
