Radiotherapy and children

Hi,

My mum is waiting a date for radiotherapy. It's being done as a precaution. She says she'll be going in everyday for 5 days for about an hour at a time.

However, I am currently pregnant (37weeks) with her first grandchild. What are the rule / recommendations around her having her radiotherapy and being around a child that young. They're currently in discussion about doing her treatment at the start of November, and if I'm overdue, it will be around the same times.

I don't want her missing out on the newborn stage, but if it needs to be ....

  • Hello and thank for posting, congratulations on your pregnancy, what a wonderful thing for you all to look forward to.

If your mums treatment is external radiotherapy, this does not mean your mum will be radioactive. The radiation will go in, focus on the treatment area and leave her body, so in this instance it does not sit in her system.

If she was having a different type of radiotherapy, then it might be different.

For reassurance on her own individual situation she can also speak to her doctor or specialist nurse, or the radiography team when she goes into the hospital. But from what you have told me I do not think your mum will need to miss out on anything with your baby.

Take care of yourself, and if you or your mum have any other queries you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040, and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
