Change in areola and discharge

Hi I've attended breast seevices today as my right areola has increased in size (just the skin) and I have experienced some discharge which I put to having breastfed 3 years ago. The consultant today said she just thinks it is because my right nipple is extra sensitive but has referred me for a scan anyway. It just sounds like a very odd diagnosis to me - that the areola has grown in size because it is now more sensitive. Has anyone else experienced similar and can advise? Many thanks.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

For most women, having unusual breast changes  is upsetting. It can bring up many different feelings  and worries.

I can't explain why your right nipple is extra sensitive. Nipple discharge can be common and is not usually the result of anything serious. The NHS has written more about this here

Your consultant seems to think that your symptoms may be related to your breasts being extra sensitive so I would be reassured by that. It is also reassuring that you are having a scan to reinforce what she thinks.

Even though it is supportive hearing what other members of the forum have to say, everyone's situation is slightly different so it is hard to compare one women's symptoms with another.

I do hope that you have your scan soon and that this will provide some reassurance for you.

If you feel that it would be helpful to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then do get back to us or give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
