FIT test

My wife who is 71 recently took a FIT poo test and her GP contacted her to say that the result at 6 was just over the recommended threshold of 5 and that she was going to refer her for a colonoscopy. However, I have read elsewhere that any result less than 10 is generally regarded as a negative test! Is the GP bring overly cautious (the actual referral was non urgent)? She did say that the pain my wife was experiencing could be down to her diverticulitis (it's on her left side) and prescribed some antibiotics which helped but did not entirely cure the problem.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

As the GP referral was non urgent, then it sounds like the doctor is not very concerned about bowel cancer. They would like an explanation for your wife's pain, and to confirm that it is due to the diverticulitis. A colonoscopy is a very thorough examination of the bowel lining, and will provide useful clinical information for the doctor.

I hope that it goes well,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
