Sudden areola size increase

Hi,

I am a little worried and confused about who to contact and what to do and whether this is even relevant.

Around 2months ago - end of July I noticed the size of both my left and right areolas change quite dramatically. They were both swollen/puffy and much much larger in size - I have very small boobs 34a so would notice the smallest of changes but this is so dramatic I can't even recognise my own boobs.

I am on the mirena coil but thought it wasn't anything to worry about because of menstrual cycle etc and thought I would wait. Both areolas are about 3.5cm and they were never that big - it makes me feel so self conscious and feel really down about my body. But thought I would wait it out just in case it was something to do with hormones.

It's been over the 2 months now, the swelling and puffiness has gone but the size of my areolas are still much larger than what they used to be (no change in breast size though)

It's so hard booking to see a gp and I've tried to book to see my gp but they could only give me a telephone appointment in 4-5weeks and because my work shifts at the hospital constantly change I didn't book an appointment.

Is this normal and what do I do ?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Breast tissue does respond to changes in hormone levels, such as contraception or pregnancy. Plus, you wouldn't normally expect any abnormal changes to affect both breasts at the same time. So try to not over worry about this.

Probably, for you to get an answer from a doctor, you will have to persevere and get an appointment to speak with your GP, just to put it past them, and see what they say about it.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
