Lung cancer

Hi my dad got diagnosed with lung cancer 3 years ago . He's  had radiotherapy , chemotherapy & immunetherapy , he's now in stage 4  with his lung cancer spreading . He's been in and out the hospital and hospic the last 4 weeks with chest infections.now he's home with a hospital bed and down stairs existence. He's sleeping long periods , eating very little , confused and on a syringe driver . This morning he's woke up with a right swollen foot. Does this mean his organs are now starting to shut down. Thank you for your time xx

  • Hi Joshua and thanks for your post

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad - it sounds like a really difficult time for you all and I hope you are getting support from the nursing team.

Regarding your dad's foot, it's a bit hard to say what may be going on without the foot being examined. It's possible that his feet are getting swollen due to a build up of fluid and that the kidneys for example may not be working properly, but there may be other reasons .

It is possible that his organs may well be starting to shut down , but again, the people looking after him on a day to day basis will be the best ones to talk to  about this.

He would need to have the foot looked at and I hope you are able to call the nurses to come in or they may be  coming in daily anyway.

It can be frustrating and confusing sometimes not knowing what is going on when someone is so poorly, so please do give us a call if you would like a chat about what is happening - the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the very best to you
