Referral for polyp after smear

Hello,

I've been having gynaecological problems, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding.  I have tested for infections and STI's, all has come back negative, I then had an abdominal ultrasound where nothing was found.   I had a smear last year (my first ever smear, due to not being old enough and then having children) it came back positive for HPV so I was told I would need to repeat the smear test in a years time.  After speaking to the GP I booked in for my smear which I had on Friday, the nurse said she could see what she thinks is a polyp and will refer me to gynaecology, I asked whether this would be the cause of the pain and she said no, she didn't think so.

I just wondered how long I'm likely to be waiting for the referral? Will it come under the 2 week referral time frame? Has anyone had a polyp referral and can advise how long you waited?
Going out of my mind with worry.

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

As a polyp is not considered urgent and not likely to be cancerous, I  would have thought that you would not be referred under the two week wait. I can't say what the waiting time is likely to be, but you could speak to the gynaecology secretary where you are due to have the procedure to find out when you are likely to be seen.

Waiting times do vary up and down the country depending how long their lists are.

We can't diagnose why you are getting the pain, but whilst you wait for your appointment do chat to your GP about what they can suggest for the pain you are experiencing.

The charity women's health have written some information about polyps which you might find helpful to read here.

I do hope that your wait is not too long.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your reply.

Will it not be classed as urgent though as I have pain and bleeding? I spoke to my gp today and the receptionist said they have sent the paperwork to me and I should receive it in a few days. I asked if it would have my appt or whether I would need to phone etc to book but she just said the letter would explain it all?
I'm just very concerned about this constant pain and bleeding/discharge.

Sorry for all the questions x

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us again,

I am sorry about the concern that this is causing you.

There are many different causes for pain and bleeding to occur other than cancer and GP's do have clinical guidelines to refer to about when to refer patients under the two week wait which you can read about here

Once you have got your letter with your appointment, if it is a while off do see if you can chat through your concerns with your GP. There may be some medications that they can give you to control your bleeding and help relieve the pain that you are experiencing.

I do hope that you know more about your situation soon.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
