Twanging in elbow after mastectomy

I had a mastectomy a few days ago.  I'm home now and they've given me exercises to do but I can't do them because I keep getting this intense shooting pain in my elbow?  Has anyone had this?  I'm assuming it's some sort of nerve issue?  I did prior to the surgery have issues with numbness in the last three fingers of that hand anyway especially when holding anything.  Just wondering if anyone has a clue what it is? Xx

  • Hello and thank you for posting

It's difficult to say whether this may be related to the operation or whether it's due to another problem that isn't necessarily connected.

It's best to try and get through to your breast care nurse for further advice as you may need to be examined before anyone can say what this may be due to.

It's possible that it may be due to a nerve problem and sometimes you can get a condition called 'cording' after surgery to the breast area which can constrict an area anywhere from your armpit down to your elbow. It's not really possible to say whether it could be this though without being examined.

There is more information about support after surgery here   which will include a section on cording under the exercises paragraph.

I hope you get seen soon by the nurses in the hospital

    All the best
