First Mammogram recall

Hey all. Had my first mammogram two weeks ago and had a letter today to go for further tests. Worried is an understatement. I did mention that 30 years ago I had a lump removed when I was 18 so I have a scar so the rational side of my brain is saying it's probably that and they don't have previous scans to compare it to but the other side of my brain is saying the worse! Just hate the waiting. Only have to wait till Wednesday

  • Hello and thanks for posting

A mammogram can show up an area that the doctors are not sure about, but they can't confirm what it is as more information is needed before a result can be given. This often means a repeat mammogram  and possibly further tests such as an ultrasound and a biopsy.

The majority of women who get a recall turn out not to have cancer. Also, women who have had their first breast screening are more likely to be recalled than those who are having subsequent mammograms. And as you mentioned if there are any question marks there are no previous breast x-rays that the specialist can use to compare 'the problem area' with to look for changes.

The organisation Breast Cancer Now have information on their website about screening recall and you might like to read it here. This gives a little more detail about the points I have mentioned.

There is no way around having to wait for the outcome of the recall. Most people find waiting in a situation like this stressful. But hopefully you will know more tomorrow.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
