Painful Breasts for over 6 months

My sister has been suffering from extremely painful breasts for over 6 monthes now. It took her 1 month just to get a phone call with the GP who then refered her for a mammogram. Finally after 7 weeks of waiting she turned up and all they did was a manual examination and said it must be her pill messing with her hormones. Bearing in mind that she has been on the same pill since she was 11 (is now 24) and is very religous on taking the pill it can not be down to this. She is not one to ask for help so for this to happen when she does has really dropped her confidence in asking again.

The question is, is there somewere she can go and have a mammogram/ultrasound as a 24 year old? She is still in pain and is strugging to give something as simple as a hug because she is in that much pain. Please and Thank you in advance.

  • Hi and thanks for posting

Painful breasts can be difficult to manage, and I imagine your sister is getting frustrated by these symptoms.

Painful breasts (or mastalgia) are very common which I appreciate is no help to your sister, but they aren't usually associated with breast cancer. More commonly, hormonal changes account for pain in the breasts, especially if it is in both breasts - and the pill is just one aspect causing hormonal fluctuation. Breast cancer would also be rare in someone of her age group, though I imagine it can be worrying. There is some more information about this here

Mammograms aren't offered to people under the age of 40 , especially to someone in their 20s, as the breasts are still very dense, making it very hard to properly interpret a mammogram. Ultrasounds are more commonly used. The only other option for your sister to get an ultrasound would be to go privately, but this can be expensive.

Breast clinics do see people for painful breasts as a condition, not just for people with lumps , so although it may be hard for your sister to try and see the GP again, do encourage her to go back and perhaps try and see another GP within the practice.

I hope she does manage to get some help with this

    All the best

    Wanda
