Platelets

Bloods have all come back ok apart from platelets 458.  Anyone know what that means?

  • Hi Sammy1978, my husband has had the same diagnosis this week so treatment was stopped.  I'm going to call our Cancer nurse tomorrow to see what can be done to help him but our oncologist is sending him to haematology, so awaiting an appointment. So give your nurse a call and ask the question.  Good luck, Carol x

  • Hi and thank you for posting

Platelets are produced in the bone marrow and are released into the blood where they help the blood to clot, helping to stop bleeding when blood vessels for example , are injured. They are also  the first cells found at sites of injury and  they clump together sealing the blood vessels .

Depending on the laboratory, but generally speaking, results vary between the range of 150- 450, so your result is just over and may be classed as borderline- on a repeat test , many bloods will go back to normal, especially if they are only very slightly different. If you have have had any test which may have caused some trauma to tissue, or inflammation, these can also slightly raise the platelet count.

As we aren't involved in your care though, it's best to go through any result with your nurse, specialist or GP who will have all your medical details to hand.

    All the best
