What happens next...am so worried!

Hello,

I am  53  and recently had a transvaginal/pelvic scan done and blood tests done recently.

My GP phoned me to tell me the blood tests were quite high and the scan showed I had fibroids (fibroid changes?) and a haemorrhagic cyst on my left ovary. GP has urgently referred me to Gynae mainly because of blood tests and I've got an appt next week.  I am wondering what happens next at the Gynae appt? Do I have another internal examnination or is it just to have a chat?  I am so worried and confused aout it all and being in this situation, as my GP said urgent referral for 'suspected cancer'  Can you please help advise me on what actually happens next at the Gynae appt?.  Thank you for your help.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and worry it is causing you.  However although you have been referred under the suspected cancer route please know that statistically the vast majority of people referred will not be found to have cancer. I hope that is the case for you.

What will happen will very much depends on how the clinic is run and what you need to have done. For example some gynae clinics are set up as a one stop shop. Meaning that if you need to have further investigations they can be done on the same day.

The appointment letter you may get may will give you some information about your appointment and may be accompanied with a leaflet about the clinic. The doctor that sees you will talk with you about any symptoms you have and will have the results of your blood test and  ultrasound scans you had.  You may need to have an internal examination and a speculum might be inserted so the doctor can see your cervix and ovaries.  You might also need to have another type of investigation which allows the doctor to see in, much more detail, your pelvic area, a biopsy may be taken. If this or any other investigation is needed but not available to you right away you might need to go back at another appointment to have it done.

I hope you hear about this appointment soon and that you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
