Ovarian cyst

Hello

I am a 60 year old post menapausal woman.

After weeks of misdiagnosis, IBS, kidney stones, diverticulitis and pelvic infection, I finally was sent for an ultrasound and have now received the results - I have a large ovarian cyst, 10cm, 400mm fluid. I've been referred to the gynaecology dept at my local hospital (my appt is next week). My blood was also tested and CA125 was 37. I'm suffering a lot of discomfort with the cyst and my anxiety is high with the worry of a possible cancer.

I don't know what to expect next, can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am so sorry to hear about your situation and all the different tests that you have had done so far.

When you see the specialist they will advise you on the best course of action based on the appearance and size of the cyst and whether you have any symptoms.

They may do another scan called a CT scan to get more information about the cyst. The charity called Women's Health have some useful information about different types of ovarian cysts which you can see here

Not all ovarian cysts are cancerous but it is important to rule this out.

You said that your CA125 was 37. CA125 is a protein produced by some ovarian cancers. It circulates in the blood, so it can be easily measured in a blood sample. But it is not a completely reliable test for ovarian cancer. This is because several other conditions of the womb and ovaries also produce CA125, for example fibroids and benign (not cancerous) ovarian cysts.

Try and keep yourself busy and your mind occupied whilst you wait for your appointment. If you are able to take someone in with you when you have your appointment it can be helpful so you can absorb all the information they are telling you. It may however be helpful to check first because of the pandemic, as rules in hospitals do vary.

I hope that you find out more soon. if you would like to have a chat about any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then do get back to us or give us a ring .  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine

  • Thanks for responding Catherine, I am grateful for your guidance - 9 more sleeps until my gynacology appointment when hopefully I will be another step closer to the mist clearing.

  • I have bilateral complex solid ovarian cysts found during a colonoscopy, lve had mri, trans vaginal ultrasounds and should have had surgery yesterday but cancelled at 4 pm due to long previous procedure, now booked for 16 Oct. The clinic appt involved an examination and the scans were organised following it, with a consultant appt where the surgery was recommended. I am over 60 and have left sided pain hopefully the op will solve my issues.

l hope you are given a treatment plan so you know where you stand

    Best wishes

    Susie

  • Thanks Susie, good luck to you too, best wishes.
