Breast clinic waiting time for lump

I've never posted in a forum before but I'm really frightened. I noticed some significant changes to my right breast and went to doctor on September 3rd. He then discovered a lump and told me that I would definitely be seen within 28 days. That time is almost up now and I've not heard anything. After contacting my doctor again I was given the number to ring the breast clinic. Before I did this l looked up the govt waiting times for my problem in Rhondda Cynon taff and it said I should be seen within two weeks. These regulations were published in June 2020 so at the height of the pandemic so you have to assume they are correct. When I phoned the clinic I was told I would have at lease another 5 weeks to wait. I asked could it be any sooner as I'm really freaking out and quoted what the regulations state about waiting times. I was then told they can't work to regulations because of Covid and they would contact me probably sometime after end of October. She also confirmed that they had received my referral the same day I saw my gap on sept 3rd. I feel like I'm in some kind of lottery with an appointment as the prize and with Covid getting worse I will be the looser. Has any one else experienced this please

  • Hello there

It is a worry when we notice a change in our bodies and appreciate needing to wait a while to have it checked out must be concerning you.

I'm afraid there are some backlogs in the system and unfortunately some people are having to wait longer than expected. This is causing a lot of worry for many people who are in the same position as you but I am sure they are trying to get through this list as quickly as possible. You could call back and ask if they have a cancellation list you could be put on in case they have a last minute cancellation that you could have.

Do remember that most lumps are harmless and will be caused by something other than cancer such as a cyst or fatty tissue called a fibroadenoma here but of course breast lumps should be still checked out just to be sure.

I really hope you are seen soon and everything will be ok.

    Take care

    Naomi

It isn't easy with the worry constantly there. I'm in Ceredigion and got told by GP it was an urgent referral would hear in 2 weeks but nothing, phoned the clinic to see and she recons it will be a few months wait.

    Sorry doesn't really help you.
