Colonoscopy-bowel cancer symptoms

Hi all sorry if this post is jumbled amd long, I'm just looking for advice/reassurance I'm 34 years old Iv had bowel issues for well over a year started back end of 2019 my symptoms are

weight loss 44 lbs in total over the last 18 months (due to loss of appetite ) it has slowed down a lot but I am still losing.

diarrhoea almost daily, like water with mucus (some days it's almost foamy but still loose)

nausea

abdominal pain, not severe but it's uncomfortable I also  get cramp like pains.

I do have other symptoms but not persistent ones like

itchy skin (& I bruise because I itch mostly on my legs)

Fissures(due to excessive diarrhoea)

finally I'm getting the colonoscopy on October 6th I'm so scared I just feel like it's going to be bad news am I being silly will they tell me anything on the day of or will I have to wait again for results ?

my nana also passed away with bowel cancer is this type of cancer hereditary?

can anyone tell me there very first symptoms would my stools be black if it was bowel cancer ? Mine appear more yellow/orange than anything else. It's on my mind all the time I'm scared of leaving my children there ages 15 8& 7

Iv had an ultrasound and blood test they come back fine.

calprotectin was also slightly high 110 in January of this year I have been tested for celiac disease that's also negative

should I be worried ?
kind regards

  • Hello Rachelerm and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you have been having unexplained symptoms and can appreciate the worry they can trigger until you have some answers. I think it is easy to forget that there are a number of other digestive conditions that can also cause symptoms so try and keep an open mind and not just think in terms of cancer.

Bowel cancer can sometimes be heredita,ry but most of the time it isn't, when it is, there is usually a noticeable pattern in the family often with more than one affected relative diagnosed at a young age.  Most bowel cancers occur in older people and aren't strongly linked to known inherited factors.

At a colonoscopy they usually tell you what they think on the spot, but if they need to take any little biopsies, you need to wait for the results to come back from the labs - this can take a week or two depending on how urgently they need to be done. So you should be a step nearer to knowing what is going on next week.

Waiting is seldom easy and most people in similar situations are unsettled. It is tempting to go on line to try to compare symptoms but I don't this will help much. Try not to focus on things like the colour of your stools as this sort of thing can take you around in circles without making you any the wiser.  Do your best to hold their nerve and keep yourself distracted over the coming week until your appointment.

If you want to talk anything over do give us a call. Our number is 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi thanks so much for your reply, i was so worried but feel so much better now I have some answers. Ino I have to wait for the confirmed diagnosis but on my colonoscopy report it says suggestive of chrones ilietis. Iv been prescribed budesonide and they have arranged a small bowel mri why would they ask for this what could it show that the colonoscopy didn't ? can this check my liver?

    thanks again.

  • Hi again Rachel

A colonoscopy only really looks at the large bowel and an MRI will be able to look at the small bowel as well. The ileum is part of the small bowel and if they think your symptoms are suggestive of chronic ileitis, it will be able to show in more detail what is going on in this area - they can see if there are any areas of abscesses, tears or pockets of inflammation amongst other conditions . It's common to have an MRI of the small bowel if there is any suggestion of any inflammatory bowel disease.

They should also be able to have a look at the liver during the MRI, but it's worth asking when you attend your appointment, so you know exactly what organs are being looked at specifically.

I hope you get your appointment through soon

    All the best

    Wanda
