Any advice on results of colposcopy or lletz would be great.

Hi there I am 34. I had a smear in 2006 I had cin 3 and received the laser treatment. It was successful. I was told I was very young to have this at that age. I had a smear about 2 months back and got told I am hpv positive and cin3 is back. Very confused and scared. I went for the colposcopy and had many biopsies done as I went to sit up I was very light headed I had to go back down lay there for a bit... just wanted home to be honest. Anyway I was then told it was cin3 and I also had this in 2006 which I never knew wot cin I had in 2006 just followed whatever they were saying to me. Now I have to go for lletz which im questioning why not laser but got told u don't get that twice now.... I am annoyed as I reported pains my backs sore now my cervix too my dr says its cause my brain knows its there. Got my lletz appointment so im not ready for this. I have no kids. I haven't had sex for 6 years. I don't understand.

  • Hello and thankyou for your post,

I am sorry that you going through treatment to remove an abnormal area (CIN 3) from your cervix again. I can appreciate you want to know why it cannot be done as it was in 2006. This is because there is so much more clinical knowledge and evidence about the cervical screening programme and there have changes to it in the last 2 decades.

The LLETZ procedure is usually carried out as it removes cells and these can then be sent to be checked out by a specialist doctor (pathologist) to see what kind of abnormal cells they are and to make sure it all has been removed.  The laser treatment destroys the cells so this means they cannot be checked by the pathologist. You can read more about these procedures on our website here

CIN3 does not cause any symptoms including pain, so I am afraid I don't know why you have it. But if you are worried it might make any physical symptoms you have feel worse. So see how this goes and if you still have pain when you go for your LLETZ procedure let the specialist doctor or nurse know about it.

I hope you will be okay.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
