Lump disappears then reappears

Hi, I found a breast lump confirmed by my GP and a nurse in the lower portion of my left breast. The GP referred me to a specialist. I felt the lump on the day of my appointment but couldn't feel it at the appointment and neither could the specialist, the ultrasound also came back clear. However, when I got home I could prominently feel it again. Can cancer lumps disappear and return? I am still very worried about it. Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid I don't know how normal it is for a breast lump to disappear, then reappear and not show up on ultrasound scans. But this sort of scan is routinely used to assess breast lumps in younger women and is a valuable method of assessment.

I think because you were seen by a breast specialist you should feel reassured. I say this because they are experts in all breast conditions. If the doctor that examined you and arranged the ultrasound scan was at all concerned about your breast they would have discussed this with you.

If you still remain worried and do not feel reassured by the breast specialist team perhaps you should go back to the GP who referred you to talk about your concerns. Usually they would get a summary letter from the hospital with any test results and the conclusions of the specialist. It can take a few weeks for this letter to be sent out.

I hope this is of some help.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
