Breast mice

I had breast implants 13months ago and today I was examined by a nurse who told me I have breast mice. I was told to go back to the GP in 4 weeks if still present but I'm concerned that no further action has been taken. I made the GP aware that my mum had stage 2 breast cancer in 2015 and had a mastectomy 2 weeks after finding the lump. Should I have been referred to the breast clinic under the circumstances or was the nurse correct leaving me to wait 4 weeks? Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can understand that finding a lump can be quite stressful. I can also understand that having a mum who has been through a breast cancer can make you more aware of your own breasts, particularly finding a lump.

The practice nurse performed a breast examination and described your breast as having breast mice. They are usually described like this as these lumps tend to move around.

When young girls present with breast lumps these are more often then not fibroadenomas which you can read about here

Breast cancer is common but usually affects women over  the age of 50. It is not a common cancer in your 20's and 30's.

There are national guidelines about when  to refer women to a breast clinic. You can have a look at these guidelines here

It is very difficult for me without being involved in your care to say whether or not you should have been referred to a breast clinic. Young women are often told to wait for a few weeks to see if the lump goes away. If before that time you notice any changes or the lump appears to be getting bigger then do go back and discuss this with your doctor.

    I hope this helps.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
