Scared about appointment

Hello.

I am a first time mum, 36, currently breastfeeding my 5 week old.
I am being treated for mastitis and nipple thrush. My breasts are not in pain, but a little uncomfortable every now again, mainly the nipple area after feeding.

Both breasts have had a reddish/purple discolouration over the whole breast since the beginning of last week, it sometimes appears lighter in colour.
I requested a breast clinic appointment as I have convinced myself I have inflammatory breast cancer. I have been physically sick due to worry and anxiety, I hardly sleep.

I have no other symptoms; no fever, no nipple discharge, no orange peel skin. Am I right to be this worried?

  • I hope you get a quick appointment breast  clinic are great and the real go to place for breast problems. Congratulations on your beautiful baby. We do feel anxious when something seems unusual. I started my trips to breast clinic when my daughter was 10 months not cancer milk ducts causing problems, probably due to long use of electric breast pump baby was 10 weeks premature. Try to relax and enjoy your beautiful baby not easy l know. Do you have any support to talk to like mum husband.

    kind regards

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry that you have all of this going on for you right now alongside your new baby.

Unfortunately we are unable to diagnose, or say if there is anything the matter, but breasts do go through many changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

It is always best to get things checked out but I understand that waiting then for these appointments is so difficult. Breast cancer in your age range is more unusual, but good to be properly assessed. If you can do try and not google your symptoms, as this can often lead to more worry, and the internet is not a doctor.

Take care, and hopefully your appointment comes through soon.

    Sarah.
