Stage 4 Localised Duodenal Cancer?

Hi.

My grandmother has been told she has the above and we are awaiting biopsy results. I am confused as they said a few months ago it hasnt spread bur was stage 4, but been told today this is stage 4 localised. Also they said biopsy will help to see if this is primary or secondary...would they not know that from cts already? Thanks

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, but it will be difficult for me to be exact about her situation as we aren't part of the team looking after her.

From you have said I understand that the cancer is a stage 4 but that it is called localised, so the cancer cells have not travelled vey far from the original tumour. This may mean it is in the lymph nodes or blood vessels very close to the cancer. Here is a good link to help you visualise this better.

The CT scan tells us where there is disease but it would not be able to tell us if something is definitely a primary or secondary cancer. For that they need to take a biopsy of the tumour and look at the cells under a microscope.

Once your grandmother has had this biopsy done, I'm sure you will know more about what exactly is happening for her and what the treatment plan maybe. If needed, your grandmother can give consent for information to be shared, and then other family members can talk to the doctors and ask questions so you all have a better understanding.

When you get more information please don't hesitate to contact us to talk anything else through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
