Are Lymph Nodes detectable in Ultra Sound

Hi

Can anyone tell me if swollen lymph nodes are always detectable on Ultra Sound scans - IF they are done properly?

I feel a small lump in my axilla. I have felt it for over 2 years. My husband can feel the lump.

I had a VERY quick ultra sound done by someone who did not believe me and told me there was nothing to see. I am told it is just a swollen lymph node.

I don't understand how this can be the case for over 2 years.

My mother had similar about 20+ years ago. Her Dr dismissed her but she persisted. She had a biopsy and it was cancer. Her cancer was NEVER in her breast - it was ONLY in her lymph gland.

I have searched online but cant find an answer.

Thank You

  • Hello ShirlyV and thanks for posting,

Ultrasounds tests can be used to detect and assess lymph nodes - they are a routine way to assess the armpit when breast cancer has been diagnosed to look for abnormal lymph nodes, if any are found they can then be biopsied.

I don't know if the lump you can feel is a lymph node or not, and if it is, whether it is larger that it should be or normal size. It may help to get a doctor's opinion about this.

I can see how your mother's experience of having been dismissed could rock your faith in what the doctors say. It must be a difficult position to be in. It doesn't sound as if you have much confidence in the person who performed this ultrasound. I am sorry that you unhappy about it. Even though it seemed quick it could still have been adequate enough to provide a satisfactory image.

Do talk things though with the doctor who arranged the ultrasound and ask them what they think this lump is. I think not having an explanation can make a lump seem more worrying so this could help. And ask if they think you need to have any more tests to rule out cancer.

Give us a call if you want to talk anything over,  our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5, weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
