Suspicious skin lesion

Hi my partner had breast cancer about 3years ago she has been getting pain in her side for a while which the gp thinks is muscular however upon inspection of her back the nurse noticed a biggish mole on her back so she took pictures on a specialist device fitted to a phone and sent them off she's been put on a 2week referral but on the letter the date for the appointment was scribbled out and the letter said underneath ignore this appointment the hospital doctor will study all information and contact you with a appointment we never heard anything beyond original date so rang and got an appointment for this Wednesday my question is if the specialist who viewed the images and strongly suspected cancer I'm pretty sure they would get you in ASAP I know everybody looks for little signs but can this be true?and also could a strange mole be related to breast cancer treatment for example fect chemo, tamoxifen, zoladex and she has recently finished her neratnib treatment.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you had to chase your wife's appointment.

I am afraid it is difficult for me to know why the doctor did not get hold of you earlier if they thought it looked suspicious. If she is seeing the dermatologist on Wednesday they will look at it with a dermoscope  and perhaps take a biopsy. Have a look at the different tests on our website here

It is difficult for me to comment on the significance of not getting hold of your wife  sooner.

It sounds like it is a while since she had treatment for breast cancer so it does not sound like the lesion on her back and the treatment would be connected but of course not being involved in her care it is really only her doctor that can make that assessment.

I can understand how unsettling waiting for appointments can be. I do hope that all goes well tomorrow.

If either of you feel that you would like to chat with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are very welcome to give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
