Possibly onset of tonsil cancer

Hi everyone, my dad had both tonsils removed on Monday.  As expected eating is causing great discomfort to his throat and tongue . Looking for ideas on what to eat and pain relief other than paracetamol.  TIA

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Your dad should have received some guidance from the hospital about his after care. Generally, a fairly soft bland diet, avoiding spicy or acidic foods, or hot drinks unless tepid. Then building up to more solid such as biscuits, bread, some cooked vegetables, cooked chicken, eggs etc.

He could try taking some ibuprofen, or paracetamol with added codeine. These can be bought over the counter, or prescribed in higher doses. It might be an idea to speak with the pharmacist before buying.

He should let his GP know, or contact his hospital team, if the pain persists or gets worse, as sometimes infection happens after surgery, and this can delay healing. Things should improve after a couple of weeks after surgery.

I hope that this is helpful,

    Wishing you the best,

    Vanda
