HRT after DCIS

Hi guys, I had DCIS and a mastectomy three years ago and since the start of this year I've been experiencing perimenopausal symptoms. My understanding was that my history meant I couldn't take HRT but I've been hearing conflicting advice recently. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on the subject?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your dilemma in deciding whether to take HRT after having had DCIS.

I can imagine with conflicting opinions it can be a difficult decision to make.

I am not sure whether you have had a chance to discuss this with your  GP to see what they say. On the whole HRT is not encouraged after breast cancer treatment unless the menopausal symptoms are severe. I am not sure whether you have looked at other options in to trying to manage your symptoms before you go down the HRT route.

We have some information on HRT after breast cancer treatment here

The charity Breast Cancer Now have some information about breast cancer and HRT which you can see here

Any decisions about HRT after a breast cancer diagnosis do need to be made with your specialist and possibly also after a consultation with a menopause clinic that you could be referred to. It's about the people who are looking after you weighing up the risks and benefits and also taking into account what you ultimately think you're comfortable with.

It may well be a question of looking at other options as to how to manage any symptoms. The NHS have produced some alternative ideas of how to control any symptoms that you may get here

I do hope that this has been helpful. if you would like to discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses then do give us a ring.   The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
