Painful Lump on right side of upper abdomen

Hi

I have suffered with a painful lump on my right upper abdomen for at least 10 years. I  have had every test with normal results.I recently thought I had discovered the cause which was fructose intolerance. I had no pain until two weeks ago when I got severe pain again but a bit lower down.

All scans and blood test normal except for changes on my liver. I am really at the end of my tether.
There is something wrong but the doctors aren't finding it!

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid we can't say what is the matter (diagnose) when someone has ongoing symptoms. Only a doctor can make a medical assessment, so we always encourage people to go back and see their GP if their symptoms are persisting.

I think a lot of people with persisting symptoms worry about cancer. As you've had your symptoms for 10 years it's highly unlikely that it's due to cancer.

There are situations when some people turn out to have symptoms that can't be explained, but after thorough investigation, doctors are satisfied that there is nothing serious that they can find going on.

I hope your GP can help.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hi Neverthetwain

I am exactly the same as you. All tests normal too. Can you tell me more about your lump? Mine is about the size of a small fist and is located just below my right rib. It feels hard when I press on it, but I can only feel it when standing. When I lie down, it completely dissappear. I am very slim so I don't understand why I can't feel it when lying down. Sometimes it feels tender. I know I have gallstones but I've been told that has nothing to do with this issue.

    Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

There can be different explanations for similar symptoms so it's usually  best not to try and compare your own situation with others, and no one here on the forums will be able to advise you as to what your lump is due to.

However, it sounds like you have been investigated and hopefully they will have been able to exclude cancer, as if there was any cause for concern, you would have been referred for more investigations.

It may be helpful to go through any reports of your tests with the GP ,as they will have been sent these from the hospital and they may have indicated what your lump is . You can also try talking things through with the GP as it sounds like you are still uneasy about the lump.

I hope things settle down soon for you

    All the best

    Wanda
