Post Menopause Bleed

Hello all

I'm just looking for a little bit of advice and clarification if possible please.

Two weeks ago I had a bleed which has literally now stopped. My doctor fast tracked me for blood tests and an ultrasound.  At the ultrasound I had an internal ultrasound also and a thickened lining was mentioned.  Today I had a gynaecological appointment where the consultant didn't have my ultrasound or blood results and spoke about having a hysteroscopy.  However, he said he wanted to carry out a biopsy of my womb there and then which he did.  My question is why do I need the hysteroscopy if a biopsy has now been taken. I wasn't expecting that today and it came as a bit of a shock as well as painful as no pain relief was given. However, I am beyond grateful that I am being monitored so quickly.

  • Hello Tracy1964 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about what has been happening. It is good that you were able to manage the biopsy as this starts off the process of finding out if there is anything the matter.

I think the hysteroscopy is so the consultant can actually take a look and see inside the womb which is another piece of the jigsaw so to speak. The biopsy that was done was taken blind but at hysteroscopy they can directly see what is going on and if needed, take a more targeted biopsy. They may want to book you into to have a hysteroscopy if these biopsy results come back ok.

The idea is to move women with post menopausal bleeding along the diagnostic process fairly quickly in case cancer is the cause, but it often isn't as there are other possible explanations.

Waiting for tests and results is unsettling, I hope you find out more soon and in the meantime keep an open mind.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
