Cervical ectropion

Today I had an colposcopy and got diagnosed with cervical ectropion which they treated there and then.
I wasn't given much information on after care after treating cervical ectropion, can somebody please give me some advice/tips on what to do and what not to do?
For example:

when will the bleeding/discharge stop?

when can I have sexual intercourse?

If my period comes can I use tampons?

any info that will be helpful please

  • Hello, I was diagnosed with this yesterday though didn't require any treatment. My consultant advised there was good information on the jo's trust website. Maybe that would be helpful.

    All the best.

  • Hello Sar95 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry you weren't give an information leaflet to tell you what to do, I think this must have been an oversight. You could try getting in touch with the colposcopy clinic to ask, I am sure they would be happy to give you some advice.

Alternatively, I agree with Sooz77, it is worth looking at the information about cervical ectropions on the website of Jo's Trust. Click on the link below to find it.

You can also just search Google to look for the recently written NHS aftercare leaflets which a lot of hospital have on their websites. Take a look at an example,

It looks like the usual advice is to avoid sex and using tampons for a month - this is because of the risk of infection until healing has occurred - and to expect some light bleeding, probably more noticeable to begin with, for several weeks while the treated area is fully healed.  You need to look out for and report any signs of infection like a temperature, smelly discharge or heaving bleeding.

    All the best,

    Julia
