Does my Grandad have cancer?

My Grandad, who is 84, has annual x-rays to check his lungs after open heart surgery 3 years ago. His most recent xray 2 weeks ago raised concerns so he was asked to come back for a CT scan. He was told after the CT scan that there is a mass at the bottom of his lung. My grandma attended the appointments with my Grandad. Both are in their 80's, and my grandfather has alzhiemers. From their reckoning, they were told that my Grandad would need a biopsy  and were given cancer leaflets. They went to the hospital this morning for what they thought was the biopsy, but instead was spirometry testing.

From doing a little bit of research online I have discovered that spirometry tests are done before a biopsy in some cases, although my grandparents have said they were not told why these tests were being done, or what the next steps are.

What I really need to know is; would my grandfather be given cancer leaflets by the hospital if he didn't have cancer?

  • Hi and thank you for posting

I can imagine this must have come as a bit of a shock and it's not surprising that you have questions about what is really going on.

It's not unusual to have a spirometry test to assess someone's lung function before a biopsy and also to see how any problem with the lungs may be affecting their breathing. They may need to know how his lung function is, to see if he is fit enough for the biopsy and for potentially any treatment that may be offered.

Regarding the cancer leaflets it's difficult to say - they may have been given to prepare your grandparents for the possibility that this may be a cancer - although they haven't been able to look at the cells of the mass, they may well have a strong suspicion that this is cancer.

Reports are usually sent to the GP from the hospital, so it may be an idea to get more of an idea of what may be going on ,for your grandmother(on behalf of your grandfather) to have a word with the GP about this. They may be able to give some information while your grandparents are waiting for some more information to come from the hospital.

There's a lot of uncertainty still which I can imagine is very frustrating - please do give us a ring if you would like to go over any of this with one of us here on the helpline - the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

I hope you all get to find out a bit more soon

    All the best
