There are a number of different reasons for spotting in between periods and you can read more about that here  

Hormonal changes , cervical ectropions (nothing to do with cancer, but where cells normally found on the inside of the cervix are on the outside, causing red, easy to bleed areas)  and different types of contraception can also cause this. The important thing is that you have had your smear and hopefully you will get the results back soon.

If all was negative, do get back to the GP about the spotting and have a chat about your symptoms.
