Post breast cancer treatment

I had a mastecomy in April after a mammogram screen showed a change which turned out to be a small tumour. I elected for the mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy. Prior to the surgery I had been having hot flushes after a gap in them after menopause. I am now continuing to have them post the surgery. I have had no adjuvant treatment - no hormone therapy as I have osteoporosis.

Is this something which is common?

  • Hello and thank you for posting

Having a mastectomy would not have an affect on your ovarian function if you have not had your ovaries removed or are not receiving any hormonal treatment.

It's always best to discuss any worries like these with your GP or hospital doctor and senior nurse, especially as we are not involved in your care and are not aware if you are taking any tablets or have any other medical condition.

It's possible that you may well be still experiencing menopausal side effects, that would be happening regardless of whether you had had a mastectomy - hot flushes can continue for many years, sometimes on an on and off basis.

Do have a chat with your team about this as you are worried and I hope things start to settle down soon for you.

All the best and I hope you are making a good recovery

  • Hi Wanda,

Thank you for your reply. I will contact the breast care nurses to see if there is anything to worry about in my case.

My recovery has been good and I was very pleased that the mammogram service was continuing despite Covid. I had no symptoms and the cancer was found quickly. I think I have been very lucky as things stand at the moment.

    Best wishes,

    Janet
