First breast mammogram recalled

I am a nervous wreck. I am 51 years old. I had my first mammogram 5 weeks ago, today I got a recall letter!! I don't have any lumps or bumps, no issues that would of taken me off to see my GP. Between the age of 22-30 (so 21-29 years ago) I had 4 breast surgery's to remove   Breast lumps/abscesses, my breasts are badly scared. When I had the mammogram I was asked about previous surgery and then the nurse made notes of where the scares were.
somebody please put my mind at rest. What can I expect from this 4 hour appoitment?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

A mammogram can show up an area that the doctors are not sure about. In your case this might be due to the previous breast surgeries you had. But they can't confirm this for sure as more information is needed before a result can be given. This often means a repeat mammogram and possibly further tests such as an ultrasound and a biopsy.

The majority of women who get a recall to the breast screening unit turn out not to have cancer. Also, women who have had their first breast screening are more likely to be recalled than those who are having subsequent mammograms. This is because, if there are any question marks there are no previous breast x-rays that the specialist can use to compare 'the problem area' with to look for changes.

The organisation Breast Cancer Now have information on their website about screening recall and you might like to read it here. This gives a little more detail about the points I have mentioned.

There is no way around having to wait for the outcome of the recall. Most people find waiting in a situation like this stressful. But hopefully you will know more soon.

I hope everything turns out to be okay.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
