Breast abcess?

Hi - looking for some advice/similar experiences.

I attended the breast clinic last week to get a few lumps checked out. One has been there for around 6 weeks. Initially the consultant advised that it was probably a cyst/mastitis but did a CT to be sure.

It was one of those tummy drop moments when the sonographer called in the consultant to look at the scan reference a 'suspicious area'.

The consultant seemed a bit confused as I'm not breast feeding (my daughter is 8) and didn't give me a diagnosis. I've been prescribed a course of antibiotics, had bloods and due back to clinic this week. On my blood form it had 'breast abcess? ' written.

Obviously I've been on Dr Google but just seeing if anyone has had a similar experience? I'm 33.

Thanks x

  • Hello there

Sorry to hear you are undergoing some tests and appreciate this must be a worry. It is understandable you are wanting to know more about what this could be. Unfortunately even if people on the forum have experienced similar to you the outcome could be very different so it is impossible to compare stories really.

From what you say it appears from the scan that you have an abscess, whilst these are more common as you say whilst breast feeding they can sometimes occur at other times. It seems the breast unit have taken some blood tests and given you some antibiotics to hopefully clear this up and are reviewing you shortly to see how things are going. If things don't settle down they may wish to carry out some more tests but they will explain this to you at the appointment if this is needed.

Easier said than done but try not to over think things for now. Avoid googling as it cannot diagnose or tell you what is going on in your situation only the doctors involved in your care can and sometimes it can take time to get to the bottom of a problem.

Sit tight for now but do ask the team involved any questions you have when you see them and express any concerns you have with them.

I hope things improve soon and you can get some peace of mind.

Do get back if you need to. You are also welcome to call our helpline on 0808 800 4040 Mon-Fri 9-5 and speak to one of the nurses if you would like to.

    Best wishes
