Bit worried about engine oil poured on fire

Last night (31st Aug 2021) at a friends house, my friend decided to start a fire outside, to get the fire going he used some waste engine oil to light it up. I can imagine that stuff had some toxic chemicals in it.

I was there for 20-30 minutes before I'd had enough and left. The wind blew the smoke everywhere, sometimes at me, sometimes not. I often held my breath, but I did inhale a bit. Am I at an increased risk of cancer because of that, or do I have to exposed to that kind of stuff for a long time before I have to worry about anything? I was sat a few meters away from the fire.

Google didn't help lol.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

No, it isn't very likely that you have come to any harm, particularly as it was in the open air, and for a short period only. Health risks are generally associated with repeated, long term exposure to chemical irritants etc.

Just to say that if you have health worries, then do get in touch with your GP for further medical advice, as this forum isn't really meant for these type of enquiries.

    Wishing all the best,

    Vanda
