Does this sound like correct information from my GP?

I found a lump three weeks ago, it's on my chest under my collar bone. I went to the doctors who sent me for a blood test and X-ray the same day.

I had the chest X-ray, the bloods. Etc

come back all clear, nothing on the X-ray. Bloods were good. I called my GP today who said she'd referred me for a ultrasound but there's a few month waiting list. She said she knows it's not cancer because the X-ray was fine and the bloods were normal but is this normal procedure. I'd thought I'd been seen for an ultrasound within the two week cancer protocol but it doesn't seem that way.

does this sound correct ?

  • Hello worriedmomx and thanks for posting,

I'm afraid we aren't in a position to be able to to say if a GP is getting things right, but most of the time they do.

In general with symptoms the context can matter, for example what a lump feels like, if there are any other symptoms going on as well and someone's age. Because cancer is more common in older people, it tends to be suspected less in someone who is younger - this is just about probabilities.

If you haven't been referred urgently (within 2 weeks), it means your GP doesn't suspect cancer.  There are guidelines produced by NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for GPs about when to refer because of suspected cancer. You can take a look at these if you want to at this link.  Most of the time these guidelines set out the sorts of symptoms which should trigger consideration of an urgent referral, occasionally they say to definitely refer, so deciding what to do is down to the judgement and expertise of the GP. But most people who are referred urgently don't turn out to have cancer at the end of the day after their symptoms have been investigated.

All I can suggest is talking things over again with your GP and keeping an eye on this lump - if it seems to be getting bigger let the GP know so they can re-consider.

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
