Somewhere to ask strange questions

Hi

God, I feel like an idiot but is it possible to develop cancer in two places at once?

My mum was diagnosed with early breast cancer in June and had a small tumour removed in early August. The surgeon was pleased with the result but wants to remove a little more tissue as it has pre cancerous cells. This is nearly under her arm but had not spread to her lymph nodes. So far so good, but today she got really upset as she has chest pain while swallowing and wonders if this could be cancer.

So, whatever it is, it can’t literally be connected to the breast tumour but...could she have cancer here as well? Every little symptom she has now she feels might be cancer which is probably understandable but I really need to know how to advise her as she cannot contact her nursing team over everything. Sorry if this sounds ridiculous but ever since her diagnosis, the world has been pretty crazy.

Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post

It would be very rare for cancer to develop in two places at once but it can occasionally happen.

After a diagnosis of cancer when people experience symptoms they automatically assume that it could be due to the cancer, but symptoms can have many causes. But any persistent symptoms should be checked just to be on the safe side. So do encourage your mum to make an appointment to see her GP.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
