Wide local excision and lymph node biopsies

My daughter had WLE and lymph node biopsies on 18th July. She's finding it really hard after surgery, she's trying to be careful and wound is on her back below shoulder blades. Thinks wound has popped open as wound looks more open in the middle? Also a lot of nerve/muscle pain with pins and needles. Is this normal? Her biopsies came back clear which is huge relief but she's so worried about things and skin check ups will be ev 6months. I thought it was 3monthly initially?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to learn of your daughters situation and how she is struggling after her operation.

It is important if she has concerns about the healing of the wound that she lets the team at the hospital or her GP surgery know so they can take a look at it.

It often takes at least 6-8 weeks to start feeling a bit more normal after most surgery, but sometimes it can take longer and it is important that people take things easy and a step at a time.

Nerve and muscles can often be affected due to surgery and this can cause a nerve type pain including pins and needle type sensations. This again usually improves with time but can take a few months to settle so it is important to also mention this to the doctor to make sure she is taking the most appropriate pain medications to try and ease things.

Follow up does vary between patients depending on the type and stage of the cancer and usually there is surgical follow up appointments after the initial surgery. The team then will decide how frequently someone needs to be reviewed after they are happy with the healing and recovery of the patient.

The follow up appointments are there to make sure patients are checked in on at regular intervals to make sure everything is ok. In between these appointments if your daughter has any worries or concerns it is important she contact her specialist team or GP to be reviewed sooner.

I hope this is helpful, please get back if you need to and you are also welcome to call our helpline on 0808 800 4040 if you wish to talk things over with one of our nurses. The number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we're here Monday-Friday 9-5.

Wishing you and your daughter all the best

    Naomi

  • Thank you for your reply. My daughter has been checked a few weeks after surgery. Now 30 days after she is experiencing pain so has contacted the team at the hospital to see if she can ask about the pain which is now worse than it was when she first had surgery. Very strange and also a worry. I wonder if wound has popped open alathough I assume there would be blood and infection if that is the case? Thanks again.
