Does ultrasound show cancer or would biopsy be advised?

Hi all.
have some swollen lymph nodes in the left side of my neck- and around a month and a bit ago I managed to have a ultrasound after goodness knows how long of just "waiting and seeing what happens." Ultrasound came back ok- however the lymph nodes are still rock hard and now the right side is starting to hurt and swell as well despite me not seemingly having an infection!! I told this to the doctor about a month ago and they said that they would do a biopsy in a month if things hadn't gone away, which they obviously haven't. But I just want to know really if the ultrasound would have likely picked up everything that could of been wrong- or is there a fair possibility that I could have a biopsy and still have cancer?

any help would be appreciated

  • Hello

An ultrasound scan is good at assessing lymph nodes and usually will give an indication of whether there is anything to be concerned about.  But no scan is fool proof, so it is good to read that your doctor is prepared to ask for a biopsy if things don't settle for you.  This should tell you once and for all if it is cancer.  Lymph nodes often get enlarged, usually this is due to the body responding to an infection, sometimes it is not clear why they have become enlarged.  As it is a common problem and most commonly can be explained by something other than cancer, it is reasonable for the doctors to not necessarily do a biopsy straight away unless you had other worrying symptoms.  As it seems to be getting worse and becoming painful, I think you should let your GP know.  Often cancerous lymph nodes are not painful, but there must be some reason for things getting worse so it would be good to get it looked at again.

    Take care

  • Hi Martin

the nodes aren't "painful"- I probably used the wrong word to describe them there. More like a deep ache.
I'll be getting in touch with my GP tomorrow to let them know things are getting worse. Thanks for your help

    many thanks

  • Hi there when you see your GP request a CT Scan with contrast which will reveal any abnormality if

there is any good luck Bigg_les

  • Hi.

It is good that your GP has asked you to go back so I would do that to follow up.

When I had my ultrasound, the radiographer knew right away. I was given diagnosis before biopsy, CT scan etc. I had 20 cancerous lymp nodes (spread from thyroid), with the largest about golf ball size - 3.5-4cm one of which was visible.

I had no symptoms, no pain / pressure /aches at all.

Everyone has different symptoms for a while range of things (particularly with the lymph nodes!), so seeing your GP if you are still concerned it's the best course of action.
