MRI and PEP scan

Diagnosed yesterday with melanoma. Due to get an MRI and a PET scan soon. Do get the results there and then or do you have to wait?

  • Hi [@Tickle11]‍

sorry to hear your news. As far as I know you don't get the scans straight away. I'm awaiting a dermatologist appointment as I have been referred under the two week window due to a mole that's itchy and sore.
Hope you are ok as can be and I know it's the waiting that is the hardest x

  • Hi,

I'm not a nurse but I've been a melanoma patient for many years. Also, the nurses won't be back until Monday so I wanted to reply to you before then.

No you don't get them there & then I'm afraid. Sometimes you may get a radiographer that will at least intimitate they've seen nothing to concern them but they are not allowed to give you a proper result. It will go to your consultant who will then decide on a treatment plan. I am sending you a friend request - if you accept it I can talk to you in more detail about the process of a melanoma diagnosis.

    Take care,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you have just been diagnosed with a melanoma and imagine this must be a worrying time for you.

Unfortunately tests and their results do take time to come back and this will be the same with the MRI and PET scan as these have to be reported by a radiologist.

It usually takes a couple of weeks for scan results to be in so hang in there for now.

Do get back if you have more questions or if you wish to talk anything over with one of the nurses our number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here Monday-Friday 9-5 on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Hi [@AngieT]‍ - I'm not sure if you're still active here but I wondered if you could give me some advice.

I had a mole (suspected melanoma) removed on 17 December.
I haven't heard the biopsy results but I had a call to arrange an MRI scan on my head.

I assume it is melanoma if this is the case but now I am terribly worried. I'm 29 x

  • Hello Slee141 and thank you for your post.

I see that you have messaged Angie T here but I have jumped in because you are in the Ask the Nurses thread (I am one of the nurses) and Angie T was last here in the summer so might not be active here.

I can appreciate that this is a worrying time for you and you want to know why a head MRI has been booked. I really don't know and because I am not part of the team caring for you I cannot say why you need to have it. You might be asked to have one if you have a headache or if the mole is on or near your head, they may be checking it out for more information. I wonder if you can get in touch with the team caring for you to ask them.

I hope you know more soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
