Oestrogen and endometrial stromal sarcoma

Hello

i have low grade endometrial stromal sarcoma and have read most of these are oestrogen receptive cancers. I'm still waiting for staging after my hysterectomy, but am becoming increasingly anxious the more I read about it or peoples journeys with it. I have read that diet can affect the growth and spread of the diet  ( I am not sure if this is researched fact or opinion), I see there is advice for breast cancers, but know ESS is rare. I've looked into oestrogen rich foods and see this covers a huge amount of both healthy and unhealthy foods and I am feeling panicked and confused about what I should be doing. I'm 52 with a teenage son so I need to keep as well as I can but not spend my whole life anxious about recurrence ( which I know is a high risk with this type of cancer) . I would be very grateful for any advice.

Thank you x

  • Hi, thanks for responding quickly.I'm recovering well, except belly button is taking a while to heal up.I have found that my Nurse hasn't been that helpful, one time she told me not to worry about the MRI appointment when they must have already known I had cancer. However I will phone her today as you suggest because the way I was told about being referred on could mean anything. Thanks so much for talking to me and I will let you know what happens xxx

  • I'm so sorry your team haven't been very helpful, it's important to find someone you can trust and talk to that knows your case. I hope you get some support. Please do message me any time xx

  • Thank you Claire, Amanda x

  • Hi Claire, I phoned my CNS and left a message.I was so glad I took your advice as a different nurse phoned me back and reassured me that I was still graded at 1b.They had discussed me at their meeting and it looks like I will have some radiotherapy so I will be referred onto a different person who then should see me for all my follow ups.Even though I know I have to have radiotherapy I was so relieved to hear my grading wasn't any higher and my washings had come back clear, so thank you so much for that advice. Amanda xx

  • Hi Amanda, I was just thinking about you and wondered how you got on on Friday ? Claire x

  • Hi Amanda, somehow I missed this post, so glad it is still 1b, and you know the plan. Hope you are ok claire x

  • Hi Claire,

thanks It went well and I was referred onto an oncologist and got a fast appointment where I went today! I'm grade 1b she said the mass was quite big 3cms but it was all contained within the uterus.I also was very relieved to find out that the brachytherapy that is being offered to me has very little side effects.( I had been googling it and reading the worst stuff and getting worried)With this treatment (I only need 3) there is just a 1% chance of it returning. How are you ? What further treatment will you have ? Thanks for your help

    Amanda xx

  • Hi Amanda. It's a different world isn't it when we are relieved it's only 3 treatments etc, but then we've both read what the alternatives could be! Mine is a rare cancer, a sarcoma, which is not really very responsive to chemo or radiotherapy. The tumour was about 8cm but still 1b, because it was a sarcoma I'm not having more treatment but have at least a 50% chance of it returning and often later ie in 10 years plus, so I've got to be vigilant all the time, so I'm still trying to work out how to be that without being anxious all the time. I've recovered well from the surgery but am getting quite bad menopausal symptoms, I need to watch what I take as the sarcoma is hormone sensitive so oestrogen and progesterone could cause it to recur ( it might be worth asking your oncologist if yours is hormone sensitive as I have been advised not to take the menopace supplements as this could stimulate the sarcoma because it is hormone sensitive ). It's all a bit of a mine field. I'm glad it's only 3 treatments then hopefully ok, it's all a very undignified process though isn't it, one to grin and bear and just remember they've seen it all before. Do keep in touch and let me know how you are getting on . I'll be thinking of you Claire xx

  • Hi Claire, that is a worry for you.Hopefully you will be given regular scans.I'm already thinking of paying privately in the years to come when scans are not offered to me.(if I can afford it ).When people talked about their 'cancer journey'I never really understood that phrase, well now I certainly do ! Things are always changing and the worry changes too.I've been through the menopause so it's not that bad for me.I never took any HRT and a friend once warned me off taking any' natural supplements'.I do hope you get the help you need and it's easy to say don't worry but perhaps there is help for that too?take care and keep in touch.Amanda xx
