Two week wait ?

Hi, I recently had a FIT test and my GP called me Friday PM to tell me the result was very high and that I needed an urgent Colonoscopy.
ive recently had bloods which showed I'm very anemic and I've lost a lot of weight recently.

im 52 and my father died of colon cancer when he was 54. My GP said I would get a urgent referral ( I work for A&E so I know the two week referral for urgent cancer investigations) I had a text this morning with an appointment with a nurse for 2nd September. I rang them and said I thought I would get a colonoscopy and she just said they are at capacity and even after the nurse they then have 14 days after that to do it?

I am just confused and worried that this doesn't seem particularly quick?

any advice would be great!

many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

Unfortunately due to the pandemic there have been some delays in hospitals managing to see patients within the two two week time frame.

We do have some more information about this on our website here

There is probably very little the hospital can do if all their appointments are full. You could ring and ask if they could fit you in if there was a cancellation. An extra week or two  will probably not make much of a difference in trying to find out the cause of your symptoms but I can understand how very stressful it must be for you.

I can understand that having had someone close diagnosed with cancer makes you more aware of your own symptoms but try not to think too far ahead. There may be other reasons other then cancer that may explain your symptoms but of course this needs to be ruled out.

You could also chat this through with your GP but there maybe little that they can do as a lot of other colorectal departments will probably be equally busy.

I am sorry not to be able to help more. If at any stage you would like to have a chat with one of the nurses then do give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you so much for your reply - you are right it won't make a huge difference, thank you again
