Mole

I have a mole on my right temple, I've never had one before, and it seems to be a bit bigger and slightly raised what's the best advice. Without panicking myself, thanks in advance

  • Hi,

I'm not a nurse but I have been a melanoma patient for many years. You don't give your age? New moles can appear at any time - if over 40 they are treated as more suspicious though. Being slightly bigger and raised isn't necessarily a sign of a problem but it's best to get your GP to look at it for your peace of mind. They will probably do a phone consultation and ask you to email photos of the mole so they can decide if it needs looking at by a dermatologist. Put a ruler beside the mole when the photo is taken so the size can be seen.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I'm afraid that neither the nurses, nor anyone on the forum, are able to tell you if there is anything the matter.

Anyone who notices any changes or symptoms that they are concerned about are best getting in contact with their GP surgery. They will organise a telephone appointment for you to talk this through with a doctor, and you may be asked to send in photographs of the mole. They may also ask you to come in and see you face to face if needed.

Take care, and hopefully you will know more soon.

    Sarah.

  • Hello,

I also have been referred urgently for an appointment regarding a mole on my leg which has grown and darkened. Im 32 and overweight and lived in Spain for a while and these factors are just making me think the worst. I'm really nervous about the process and when I'll get the appt etc. I also have two other moles on my body which I am concerned about but have not changed in the last few months. Do you know if the dr I see will be able to look at those ones too? Or is it only the mole you are referred for?
i find this chat really helpful and have been reading other channels, namely regarding the health of family members but thought I'd ask about this one today.

    many thanks

  • Hi,

They usually ask if the patient has any other moles of concern or even do a quick look at other moles without asking, so don't be afraid to point out the moles that are worrying you. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)

  • Thank you so much Angie. I will let you know how I get on. I saw the GP on Thursday last week and haven't got an appt letter though yet but hoping it comes soon.

  • Hi [@AngieT]‍ ,

I have an appointment for next week on the 14th at dermatology so I am relieved about that. Shortly after making the appt for the mole with the gp I had sudden lumps appear in the right armpit that were under the skin, painful, hot and red however luckily they are gone now so the gp thought they may be lymph nodes or cluster boils. I will update next week,

    I hope you're keeping well.

    Rosa

  • Hi Rosa,

I'm glad you have your appointment for next week - not too long to wait. It would be very unusual for the nodes in the armpit to be linked to the mole on your leg. It would normally be the nodes in the groin that would be affected if it was melanoma in a lower limb. Also, malignant nodes aren't usually painful & red lumps - they are painless and flesh coloured so it sounds like your armpit nodes may be fighting an infection.

    Good luck xx

  • Thank you [@AngieT]‍ yes, I think you're right about the infection. My mind was just making associations with everything! Xx

  • Hi Angie,

the dr said my mole was completely normal which I'm very pleased about. He was very speedy/rushed and I had to ask him to have a look at the other moles and I was in and out in less than 2 minutes. Which seemed a bit odd but nevertheless I am very grateful they were normal and I'm also grateful for your reassurance Angie so thank you very much xx

  • So glad to hear this rosam. Thank you for coming back and letting us know - it will give great hope to others going through the same worry. Take care x
